Bradley Portin is the Director of the Education Program and Professor at the University of Washington Bothell and is adjunct faculty in the College of Education at the University of Washington Seattle. Dr. Portin also co-directs with Dr. Tom Bellamy the Leadership Development for Educators Program—an innovative new program for learning-focused teacher leaders and future principals. Dr. Portin, a former public school principal, has spent the last decade focusing on the evolving roles of school principals, teacher leaders, and how school and district leadership is developing to meet the diverse learning needs of all students.
Dr. Portin has been co-principal investigator for large-scale national research projects at the University of Washington Center for Teaching and Policy funded by The Wallace Foundation and earlier research at the Center for Reinventing Public Education. The most recent project, which concluded in 2009, was a national study of learning-centered urban school leadership. This research and other projects have produced a number of publications including: Leadership for Learning Improvement in Urban Schools (2009, Portin, Knapp, Dareff, Feldman, Russell, Samuelson, & Yeh); Expanding Learning-focused Leadership in US Urban Schools (2011, Portin & Knapp [in the International Handbook on Leadership for Learning, Townsend and MacBeath, Eds]); and Making Sense of Leading Schools: A Study of the Principalship (2003, Portin, DeArmond, Gundlach, and Schneider). Dr. Portin maintains extensive links with researchers internationally in their efforts to expand preparation, support, and research for school leaders. He is on the editorial board for the journal, Educational Assessment, Evaluation and Accountability and has held visiting professorships in Norway, England, and the United Arab Emirates.
