Portfolio School Districts Project

Network of Leaders Pursuing Portfolio Strategies

Localities considering or just adopting a portfolio strategy can learn a great deal from others that have opened and closed dozens of schools, learned to judge the qualifications of potential school providers, created sophisticated data and analysis systems, and attracted talented principals and teachers from new sources. Even the most experienced localities are struggling with many issues, and can benefit from the experience of others.

This initiative provides a national network by which local leaders pursuing or interested in portfolio strategies can teach and support one other. Network members include local district leaders, mayors’ office staffers, foundation and business coalition heads, heads of teacher associations and nonprofits, and others, all interested in creating or strengthening a local portfolio strategy.

Network meetings are held once every six months, with agendas dependent upon member interests and emerging events in key localities. Coming soon is a website and reform handbook with examples and lessons learned about the design, implementation, and related political support strategies for portfolio districts.

The following cities/districts can be looked to for examples of adopted reform methods and are either subjects for Portfolio District Project research, or are members of the network.
