School choice advocates contend that diversity within the student population requires diversity within schools to allow parents to select the right fit for their children. This can be especially true for students with disabilities. The diversity and innovation charter schools provide in the ways they approach special education represent an important addition to the public education landscape. Our work identifies policy, research, and investment opportunities needed to confront the challenges charter schools and parents of special needs students face.
