Lifting Up Promising District Plans
Following nationwide school closures amid the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of students, families, and education stakeholders are wondering “what’s next?” Particularly, significant questions remain on how district leaders will formulate their plans to reopen schools for the 2020-21 school year.
While some school districts have been able to start thinking proactively about creative ways to adjust in this challenging time, others have been slower to exit “crisis mode.” This could be for a variety of reasons, from the number of district staff to the concentration of coronavirus cases.
Nevertheless, districts will need to craft fall reopening plans that account for in-person, remote, and hybrid instructional scenarios, as medical experts predict that waves of COVID-19 infections will continue to hamper operations throughout the upcoming school year.
To help local education leaders plan for school reopenings, the Collaborative for Student Success and CRPE are launching an effort around district response plans with the goals of 1) evaluating district response plans for the 2020-21 academic year that have been made publicly available, and 2) providing additional districts with a rubric that can be used as a planning tool as leaders make decisions for next school year.
CRPE is currently collecting and documenting response plans and guidance from school districts across the country. The Collaborative and CRPE believe that this wealth of knowledge can be capitalized upon to positively impact additional district and state response efforts around the country by further informing how states and districts successfully prepare for the upcoming school year.
