Share of Students Enrolled in Top-Scoring Elementary and Middle Schools in Math by FRL Status
This figure shows the percentage of students—overall and by subgroup—that are enrolled in the city’s top-scoring elementary and middle schools. By “top-scoring,” we mean schools that fall in the top quintile of the city in terms of proficiency rates in the most recent available year of data. To put the results in context, if subgroups enrolled in schools at the same rates, the bars would be even and, by definition, clustered around 20 percent. Although student demographics, residence, and school performance are all clearly correlated, we nevertheless might still expect to see some variation across the cities due to the exercise of public school choice and the range of students and schools in the cities.
